The only woman candidate successful in her bid for public office this election year is Vui Florence Vaili Saulo, the newest faipule for Tuala-uta.  A total of 9 women candidates vied for seats in the House of Representatives on Tuesday’s election. Vui, who polled 1,141 votes will join incumbent Larry Sanitoa as the two representatives for District 15.

Vui is a self-made business woman who owns Florence Saulo Finance & Insurance Company. Her business has been providing scholarship opportunities for the youth for close to two decades.  Vui is also a dedicated member of her church, the Methodist Church of Tafuna-Fagaima. She is a lay preacher, treasurer for the Tafuna Methodist Youth, senior member of the Au-Auso or womensfellowship and currently serves as treasurer for the Women’s Ecumenical Fellowship of American Samoa. Vui is married to Meleisea Paulo Saulo, the finance manager in the Governor’s Office and they have four children.

Vui said she regrets that she is the only woman entering the House and wished more women won their elections, but she respects the wishes of the voters.  She said what is important to her is the fact that Tuala-uta has given her their trust to represent them in the House of Representatives and she will work hard to be their voice in the Fono.
