02 December 2008

FIJI is relatively good in the area of female representation in Parliament. Pacific Islands Forum secretariat regional governance Adviser Henry Ivarature said this was not the case in Papua New Guinea.

He said the issue was discussed at the Secretariat meeting in Tonga.

"Fiji does relatively well until December, 2006." "In Papua new Guinea there has only been one woman in a 109-seat Parliament for nearly over 11 years.

"The global trend is probably set by Rwanda, which I think this year has achieved over 50 per cent of women in Parliament."They have achieved that through special measures. "We want to change the situation in the Pacific."
