Women in Fiji have been encouraged to participate during the constitutional consultation process. Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni in a statement said this is because women comprise of 49 per cent of Fiji’s population and they should be encouraged to participate. Dr Luveni said it is important for them to be well-informed and engaged in the consultation process along with having a clear understanding of electoral reforms. She said in the last election, there were up to 12 to 13 per cent women representation in parliament and they would like to see this reach 30 percent. She also said women at all levels will be given the opportunity to be engaged in the constitution process and those living in rural areas are encouraged to come forward during the process.
