Papua New Guinea has a national Parliament with 111 members. Since Independence in 1975, only seven women have ever been elected to PNG’s National Parliament. Papua New Guinea will soon head into national elections. In accordance with the timetable set down by the PNG Election Commission, it is anticipated that election writs will be issued in April 2017 with polls to be held in July 2017.

In advance of the 2017 national elections, development partners have undertaken a number of initiatives to support women candidates running in the 2012 national elections. UNDP ran the second-ever Practice Parliament for PNG Women from 7-13 March 2017, in collaboration the with Office of Integrity of Political Parties, the National Parliament and Department of Community Development and Religionwith Office of Integrity of Political Parties, the National Parliament and Department of Community Development and Religion. The Practice Parliament brought together 45 women from around the country. For the first time it was held in the National Parliamentary Precinct in the State Room. The State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Project based at the Australian National University also ran women candidates training from January to March 2017.

On 9th April 2017, the PNG Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato, announced that 4068 candidates, 200 of them women, had registered their intention to contest the 2017 National Election in Papua New Guinea. When nominations closed on 27th April 2017 at 4pm PNG time, only 3332 candidates had completed their nominations, of which only 165 were women candidates. A total of 44 political parties were registered to contest the 2017 national eelctions. Polling began on 24th June for two weeks and ended on 8th July 2017, with results expected to be announced in 30 days time accoridng to national news reports.
